Thoothukudi took its name from the two words of Tamil language; ‘Thoothu’ and ‘Kudi’ meaning ‘Dig’ and ‘Drink’ respectively. As per the history of the town, it had no rivers and the only source of drinking water was from wells. The city is very famous for its pearl fishing and various ports located here.
